INCREASED TRAINING AND FEES FOR SECURITY GUARDS

The following are some of the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services' most frequently asked questions:

Increased Training Q&A

  1. If I already have a valid security guard card by July 1, 2004, do I have to complete the 40-Hour training?

    No, but the Bureau recommends that you take the additional training to increase your value to your employer.

  2. Can I take the entire 40-hour training course all at once?

    Yes.

  3. Where do I take the full 40-hour training course?

    The 40-hour Power to Arrest training course can be administered by a licensed private patrol operator and/or a Bureau-licensed training facility.

  4. What will happen if I do not complete the required 40-hour training course in a timely manner?

    Your security guard registration will be subject to revocation, suspension and/or fine by the Bureau.

  5. I have completed the first eight hours of the required training course, however, I am still unemployed. Do I have to complete the additional 32 hours of training within the next 60 days?

    No, you must complete your first 16 hours within 30 days of employment. The additional 16 hours must be completed within six months from the date of hire.

  6. I have completed the 832 PC training. Am I exempt from the 40-hour training course?

    No, in order to work as a security guard, the 40-hour training course must be completed on time.

  7. After I complete the 40-hour training course and my security guard registration is up for renewal, do I have to take the course again?

    No.

  8. My security guard registration expired and I would like to reapply for registration. Do I have to take the 40-hour training course again?

    Yes.

  9. Can I take the 40-hour course in a language other than English?

    No, the course can only be taken in English.

  10. Can I take the 40-hour course before I take a job as a security guard?

    Yes, you can receive the 40-hour training course at a Bureau-certified training facility. You can obtain a listing on the Bureau's web site at www.bsis.ca.gov/ and/or by contacting the Bureau at (916) 322-4000.

  11. What should I do if I hire a security guard without any proof of completion of the 40-hour training course?

    Make sure that the eight hour power to arrest course is completed before the guard is assigned to a duty location, that the first 16 hours of required security officer skills training is completed within the first 30 days of hire, and that another 16 hours of required training is completed within the first six months of the date of hire.

Fee Increase Q&A

  1. What if I forgot to send the proper fees for the initial security guard registration?

    Your security guard application will be put on hold until the Bureau receives the correct fee. A notice of "underpayment" will be mailed to you.

  2. Do I have to pay a fee to the Bureau for taking the 40-hour course?

    No, the $50 initial security guard registration fee is the only fee paid to the Bureau for the processing of your security guard application. In addition, you must also submit the $32 Department of Justice fee and $19 Federal Bureau of Investigation fee.

Refresher Course Q&A

  1. When do I have to complete my refresher course?

    The refresher course must be given by the end of the guard's first full calendar year and every calendar year thereafter after completing the required 40-hour training requirement.

  2. The security guard cannot provide proof of completion of the eight-hour refresher training. Can I hirehim and retroactively provide the training?

    You can hire him but you cannot retroactively provide the eight hours of refresher training. You must provide eight-hour refresher training within the next calendar year.
