Reasonable Accommodations

If you are applying for the Uniform CPA Examination (CPA Exam) and require a reasonable accommodation, we encourage you to review the information below to avoid unnecessary delays in the processing of your request.

The California Board of Accountancy (CBA) approves reasonable accommodations based on a physical or mental disability or medical condition. Additionally, the CBA approves reasonable accommodations on the basis of religion.

If you require reasonable consideration for medical needs such as food, water, or medication, the CBA recommends that you review the CPA Exam Candidate Guide for information related to the format and break schedule of the CPA Exam. You may store food, water, or medication in a locker that is accessible during scheduled breaks. If you require other provisions, you will need to request CBA approval.

Visit Prometric's website for information regarding items that are allowed in the testing room without prior CBA approval and upon visual inspection by the Test Center Administrator or Remote Proctored staff.

How to Request an Accommodation - New Applicants

All requests for accommodations require CBA approval. Requests must include all required documentation and must be submitted to the CBA with the Application Remittance Form and payment. Requests for accommodations cannot be granted at the testing center.

If you require reasonable accommodations, you must:

  1. Inform the CBA by completing the accommodation section of the online client account.
  2. Complete the appropriate form and/or written statement, along with the necessary documentation.
    • If you need an accommodation related to an existing disability, please complete the Request for Accommodations of Disabilities form.
    • If you need an accommodation due to a medical condition, please complete the Medical Consideration Request form.
    • If you need an accommodation related to a religious article, please submit a signed written request detailing the accommodation.
  3. You may submit your form and/or written statement along with the documentation by email to examinfo@cba.ca.gov, or by mail along with your application remittance form.
  4. Notify the CBA via email at examinfo@cba.ca.gov once your exam section selection(s) have been made, so that we may add your approved accommodations.

How to Request an Accommodation - Repeat Applicants with Previously Approved Accommodations

Each time you apply and pay the examination application fee to the CBA, you will need to complete the following:

  1. If no new or additional accommodations are needed, you should provide your CBA Accommodations Approval letter with submission of your repeat remittance application.
  2. If for future exams, you intend to ask for new or additional accommodations other than those already approved:

How to Verify Accommodations have been Approved

  1. You must check your notice to schedule (NTS) for confirmation that the requested accommodations are present and as requested.
  2. If any accommodations are missing, you will need to contact the CBA: Staff will communicate with our partners at NASBA to amend your approved accommodations and update the NTS.
  3. You must check any new or amended NTS to ensure that each requested accommodation is listed.
    • Please note that accommodations do not carry over from one test event to another.
    • Candidates need to notify the CBA each time a new NTS is provided so they can be added.
    • Your initial documentation and approval letter will be kept on file, so you are not obligated to resubmit unless requesting additional accommodations.
